4. Results of the measures taken against airborne landings.
a. At about 0230 hours the two platoons of the 1.Pz. Jg. Komp. 716 which had been dispatched forward already encountered the enemy at the bridge of Benouville. The attack did not result, the company commander was wounded. The 11./192 did not succeed in retaking the bridge either by 0330 hours. The bridge was blocked off on the western shore. The bulk of the 11./192 had to be drawn away about 9 o'clock for action around hill 61 north of Periers.
b. The 3./A.R. 1716 had started to shell the enemy airborne landings in the Ranville area soon after 0030 hours. By 7 o'clock the enemy was forced to leave the former gun position of the 1. Battr. 1716 as a result of the concentrated fire of the 3. and 4. Battr. 1716.
c. Enemy attacks from the south and the Salenellas and Franceville strongpoints were repelled by opposing units of the strong point crews and by the remainder of the Ostbatl. 642.
d. Enemy advances on the area to the south were repelled by parts of the Pi-Batl. 716 and of the 21. Pz. Div.
The development of the situation after 5 o'clock on the western bank of the Orne, in the center and on the left wing of the division forced us to restrict ourselves to the defense on the eastern bank and to prevent the enemy from advancing to the north, the east and the south, until the attack which the 21. Pz. Div. was ordered to make was effected.
